The question that has been asked by the world’s greatest thinkers for centuries is “Does God exist?”, and if God does exist, how can we find the evidence to know this to be true?
While at the Impact 360 Fellows Program, I have had the chance to learn and discuss arguments for God’s existence with multiple professors and have been able to find undeniable evidence that there is a God!
Here is a brief overview of main arguments for God’s existence that have been discussed in class:
- The Contingency argument states that all things in existence, must have an explanation of their existence. However, nothing can come from nothing. It must either exist by the necessity of its own nature or by an external cause.
- The Kalam Cosmological argument claims that whatever begins to exist must have a beginning cause. If the universe had no beginning and has gradually been expanding forever, then the Second Law of Thermodynamics states that the energy and heat of this universe would have run out and reached a state of equilibrium by now. Since it has not, it could be concluded that the universe has a beginning.
- The Fine-tuning argument makes the case that the probability of the universe spontaneously coming into existence with all the necessities required for the possibility of life are impossible. Only an intelligent designer of the universe could have made sense of all the necessary, fundamental factors and fine-tuning for the universe to exist and be capable of life.
In all the arguments of how God brought the universe into existence, the question often arises of, “Who created God?”. However, the only response to that would be “a greater God”. This reasoning would simply become circular. Since God did not come to exist by an external cause, he must exist out of the necessity of his own nature (it’s impossible for him not to exist). To create the universe, God must be spaceless, timeless, immaterial, uncaused, extremely powerful and intelligent.
These are only a few examples of evidence for God’s existence that have been discussed at the Fellows program, but there is evidence for God all around. It is important for believers to understand why they believe in God instead of just having blind faith and hoping they picked the right thing to be true. Here at Impact 360, I’ve gotten the opportunity to study apologetics (the defense of the Christian faith by giving evidence and reason to support it). While class teaches about the evidence for God, we also have a safe environment to learn how to discuss complex topics and ask questions to understand our beliefs.
As Class 19 continues this journey, our prayer request is that we might accurately learn truth, be open to new ideas, grow in a community that loves and pleases God, and will ultimately have the knowledge and confidence to share our faith and lead others to Christ.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:16-17 ESV
