What is AMIDE?
AMIDE is a school for missionaries where they are immersed in different cultures and learn from other missionaries and renowned authors while having fun with community activities. AMIDE is an oasis from the broken world outside that provides an open door for growth alongside fellow Christians and aspiring missionaries.
During our stay at AMIDE, we saw how they form community. With missionaries from so many different backgrounds and countries, people are pushed out of their comfort zones and into courage, learning, and new friendships. The teachers who train the missionaries are available to sit down and talk to them about anything. This includes topics ranging from self-reflections to deeper questions about the complex reality of a conversational relationship with our Lord. Worship is a necessary aspect of AMIDE. The staff, teachers, and students gather together for worship multiple times a day, and the energy and joy with which it is done is beautiful to watch.
Another core part of AMIDE that we saw in action is prayer. Prayer is a constant practice that brings the community together. During classes, there are several pauses to pray and talk to God. Prayers are said before every meal, snack break, or activity to remind the people at AMIDE to do everything for the glory of God. Students and staff are encouraged to pray together through prayer partners. This creates opportunities for new relationships and conversations with God.
The last obvious core aspect we saw at AMIDE is the love the people have for each other. We were constantly being welcomed into everything they did.
AMIDE offers workshops to prepare missionaries to better share the gospel. We participated in a workshop about how to teach kids moral lessons and the Bible through fun activities. AMIDE does this through magic tricks and useful tools to help kids visualize the good news of Christ.
It has been cool to see a place working to fulfill the Great Commission that was given to us by Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” We are so grateful for the opportunity we had to stay at AMIDE. It was inspiring to see not only the diversity among these missionaries but how they share the same heart for God. It has been an incredible experience, and we are excited to see what else God has in store for us in Brazil.
