Reason for the Hope

Faith and reason: those two concepts easily can seem contradictory in today’s society. It seems that faith and reason are often at war – whether a person will have “blind” faith or be “reasonable” and believe in true science. Through the first month of Impact, the Fellows have come to see and understand how this perception could not be more wrong. Counter to the increasingly postmodernist society, the Fellows have been shown how in fact reason and logic confirm our faith and how without God nothing can make logical sense. The Fellows have heard from many speakers including Brett Kunkle, Dr. J.P. Moreland, and Frank Turek. They have discussed how reason and logic prove God’s existence.

Brett Kunkle showed us tactics on how to start conversations with non-believers and believers. There were two key questions to ask people: “what do you mean by that?” and “how did you come to that conclusion?” These two questions break down the vast majority of non-believers’ worldviews, making them think and possibly reconsider their views, all while keeping all the pressure off yourself.

Frank Turek and J.P. Moreland showed us the offensive to our faith. Dr. J.P. Moreland showed us how philosophically, Christianity is the only worldview that adds up.

For example, we innately know that murder is wrong, but how do we know that? Since we know that murder is wrong, there must be an absolute moral law. For there to be an absolute moral law, there has to be a force outside: an absolute moral law-giver. This leads to an intelligent designer, otherwise known as God. Though even when you can prove God’s existence with logic and philosophy, it still may seem like science does not support it.

Frank Turek shows how it is quite the opposite. Just with one argument of many—Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity—we can see without a doubt that there was a beginning to our universe. If there was a beginning, some outside force must have put everything into being. The only possible solution, once again, is God.

These points, as well as many more, specifically point and exemplify the One True God. These three men have illuminated and corrected many misconceptions that our society accepts as truth. They showed us how faith is not contrary to reason. In fact, faith is the belief in something we have REASON to believe. Faith and reason are one.
